Chelsea vs Arsenal
England – Premier League
Date: Wednesday, 20 April 2022
Kick-off at 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
Venue: Stamford Bridge.
When Chelsea and Arsenal meet in the Premier League this week, they will be looking to extend their grip on third place, while Arsenal will be hoping to resurrect their top-four aspirations.
Chelsea will face London rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, bringing the Premier League’s midweek clashes to a close.
Chelsea has won three games in a row in all competitions heading into this match.
Despite being ousted from the UEFA Champions League on aggregate, the Blues came back with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday to clinch their spot in the FA Cup final.
Thomas Tuchel will now hope that his team can maintain their momentum and secure third place in the Premier League rankings, despite the fact that Tottenham Hotspur are only five points behind them despite having played two games more.
Arsenal’s chances of finishing in the top four are dwindling after a string of poor results.
Arsenal has dropped four of its last five league games, including three straight defeats to Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, and, most recently, Southampton.
Mikel Arteta’s team has slipped to sixth place in the rankings, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, despite having a game in hand.
Arsenal will be aiming for a dramatic change of fortunes with a victory over Chelsea.
However, given their current form, the Gunners will face a difficult task.
Furthermore, the Blues have already beaten their local rivals this season, winning 2-0 at the Emirates in the reverse meeting.
On Wednesday, they’ll be aiming for a similar result.
Chelsea vs Arsenal Head to head :
- Their last 5 league meetings saw both teams winning twice while a draw occurred on another fixture.
- Three out of their last five PL meetings saw scoring from both sides.
- The reverse fixture on last August saw a 2-0 win in favour of Chelsea.
- The Blues won the last 2 h2hs coming in a row.
Chelsea vs Arsenal Prediction :
Not long ago, Arsenal appeared to be the favorites to finish in the top four, but a string of dismal results threatens to ruin their season.
Injuries to important players such as Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney, as well as the absence of Alexandre Lacazette, have revealed their lack of depth in critical parts of the pitch.
Chelsea, on the other hand, has bounced back nicely from their European loss. Despite missing out on a place in the Champions League semi-finals, they beat Real Madrid last week and backed that up with a good performance against a tough Crystal Palace side on Sunday.
Chelsea should be able to win all three points on Wednesday night, and they may even be able to keep a clean sheet, given that Arsenal has failed to score in three of their previous five league games.
Chelsea vs Arsenal Team News :
Mateo Kovacic suffered an ankle injury after just 26 minutes of Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final triumph against Palace, and while the extent of the damage is yet unknown, Tuchel confirmed after the game that the injury appeared to be significant.
Long-term absentees Ben Chilwell and Callum Hudson-Odoi are keeping Kovacic company in the treatment room, while Ross Barkley missed the Palace triumph due to illness, but that could have been a tactical decision by Tuchel.
In Kovacic’s absence, N’Golo Kante will likely return to the engine room, and Tuchel may consider starting Romelu Lukaku, who tortured the Arsenal backline at the Emirates earlier this season.
Meanwhile, Arsenal right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu is expected to return to team training ahead of Wednesday’s match and might make his comeback here, while Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney remain sidelined.
After testing positive for COVID-19 before the Southampton match, captain Alexandre Lacazette’s participation is also in doubt, thus Eddie Nketiah could be called upon to lead the charge once more at Stamford Bridge.
Arteta has the option of moving Gabriel Martinelli to central midfield and bringing Emile Smith Rowe back in on the left flank, a formula that Arsenal fans have been clamoring for, and the England international has fond memories of the ground after scoring the game-winning goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 victory there last season.
